Artist Statement
_
My goal as a teaching artist is to design and execute a positive, educational, inclusive, and creative experience for students, teachers and the local community. It is my hope that with more attention placed on process than on product, student artwork will lift the soul and inspire an understanding of life. I also incorporate multi-cultural arts education as a teaching tool for self-discovery, cultural awareness, and tolerance of the unique differences across humanity.
I believe art has the power to transform thinking and engage student’s in learning. Integrating art into the curriculum strengthens learning across multiple disciplines, builds student esteem and confidence, and offers a positive and constructive means of expression. This approach allows students to make connections to the greater world.
· Art invites multiple solutions and perspectives.
· Art lifts the human spirit and helps people communicate and express their feelings.
· Art is the expression of an idea that challenges current perception.
· Art is a process of innovation that teaches flexibility and builds confidence.
· Art encourages understanding while living in the freedom of one’s power to create!

Values
_
I have
passion for being involved in deeply meaningful work that leaves a positive
impact on humanity. I encourage and build student confidence in their
knowledge, emotional growth, and physical development. I have a calm and
organized manner with children. I am able to direct and follow through in
organizing tasks and projects for groups.
I am patient, understanding, and respectful of all children’s unique abilities and learning dispositions. I recognize the importance of keen observation, unbiased judgment, positive discipline and finding innovative ways to assist those who are struggling.

Art Teaching Process Objective
_
I teach
structured lessons using simple drawing exercises and open-ended lessons guided
by essential questioning, each integrated into age-level appropriate
curriculum. Independent and whole class projects guide students in
self-discovery of multiple perspectives and to understand, "the limits of our language do not define the limits of our cognition." (Eisner, E. 2002) Introducing students to
the fundamentals of drawing, painting, and 3D construction,
I stimulate their ability and ease in creative thinking and collaborative problem solving as they create, perceive, understand and evaluate.
I have deep respect and patience with children. Step-by-step lessons follow a gradual release model allow students to independently solve problems, make decisions and think creatively while developing their observational skills.
I structure projects to follow the Essential Academic Learning Requirements (EALR) standards for arts educations in Washington State. Substantial studio arts experience includes: life drawing , charcoal, pastel, watercolor, oil acrylic painting, fiber arts, clay, textiles, monoprint making, silk screen, photography, video, art history and digital art.

Biographical Sketch
_
Born in
1966, raised in Gloucester, MA., I was struck at an early age by the beauty of
the natural world around me; white sandy beaches, granite shores, and the smell
of the sea. I studied at length under Martin R. Ahearn, a member of the
American Watercolor Society. I earned a Bachelor’s degree in fine art at
Syracuse University, N.Y. This provided the foundation for my artistic core and
opened my mind to the London Art Center. I have traveled extensively through
Europe, Mexico, Belize, British Virgin Islands, Alaska, Hawaii and the rest of
the United States.
